“Abortion touches a person’s life on many levels. It impacts one’s views of oneself in medical, political, religious, philosophical, social, and familial ways. This is why it is exceptionally difficult for people to understand, process, and reconcile this experience with who they are and who they want to be.” -Dr. Theresa Burke

A Personal Journey

Abortion is a personal experience for every woman who has been through one and even men who have been a part of one. Many believe that after an abortion they will return to their normal lives as if nothing happened. For some this is true, but for others there are still questions and emotions. Some emotions may include loss, feeling alone, confusion, anger, sadness and sometimes there are no feelings at all initially. For some, they might experience a mix of emotions of hope and relief combined with loss and sadness.

Have you noticed any emotional or physical changes (including):

  • Increased or lack of emotions
  • Feelings of disconnect
  • Wanting to be alone
  • Lack of interest in work, school or normal activities
  • Lack of interest in relationships and/or sex
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Self-destructive activities (alcohol/drug abuse, eating disorders)
  • Difficulty in maintaining or developing relationships
  • Difficulty sleeping, insomnia, and/or nightmares
  • Triggered by pregnant women, babies, children, and baby showers
  • Increase in anger or rage
  • Fear of future relationships and pregnancy

If you have experienced any of these or questions, you might find it helpful to talk about the abortion and process your feelings. Some choose to live in silence because of fear of how others will react. You do not have to go through this journey alone or live in silence. Even if things feel okay right now, you still might find it helpful to talk to someone. We are here to help.
